The "Royal Sovereign" or "Revenge" Class were a slightly smaller and slower version of the "Queen Elizabeth" Class. Two additional ships, Renown and Repulse, were suspended on 26 August 1914 and re-ordered as battlecruisers, while an eighth ship, Resistance, was cancelled on 26 August 1914.
Unlike the "Queen Elizabeth" Class, none of the "Royal Sovereign" Class underwent any significant modification between the wars, and by the outbreak of World War II they were somewhat obsolescent and unsuitable for the first line of battle. However, by necessity, some did serve with the battle fleets early in the war. Mostly they were employed as escorts for ocean convoys, as their very slow speed was forever to their detriment.
