These ships were designed as an enlarged
"King George V" Class with 16" guns. Lion
and Temeraire were laid down in July and June 1939
respectively, but work was suspended on 3 October 1940 due to the
urgency of other building requirements. Some work was resumed
later but in 1942 they were finally cancelled and broken up on
the slips in 1942-43.
Conqueror and Thunder were never laid down.
