1:600 Broadsword. She and Battleaxe
differed in the transposing of "B" 4" gun
and squids and in shipping an STD
director aft of the fore-funnel to cover the rear arcs of
fire. Crew was also slightly increased © Andrew Arthur |
Despite being an excellent and sound design, compared tho the
'utility' classes, it's hull was too big to fit into the smaller
yards for building, and a smaller desing was drafted, on the
"Z" class hull, but because a full AA armament was
requested, they had to break the change to 4.5" guns and
revert to the 4" to allow sufficient numbers to be carried.
( despite the fact it had been repeatedly rejected as too light
for fleet work throughout the war.)
A surprising innovatio, for a British destroyer, was the unit
machinery arrangement, and the isolated boilerd required seperate
funnels, and the unnatractive rig of the "D" class was
used; a large exhaust trunked up through the lattice and an
isolated stump funnel aft - not very nice on the eye.
The designed AA armament was a new twin 4" AA turret in
"A", "B" and "X" positions, two RDF
fitted director controled twin 40mm's sided on the fore end of
the aft shelter deck, two twin 20mm's in the wings and two
quadruple 21" torpedoes.
Cessation of hostilities resulted in 15 units being cancelled,
and the survivors had a modified armament;
Two squid mortars replaced either "B" ( Battleaxe
and Broadsword ) or "X" ( Scorpion
and Crossbow ) guns, in a large housing, the twin 20mm's
were replaced by single 40mm Bofors, and the STD tower controlled
Bofors twins were replaced by RDF fitted "STAAG" twins.
Quintuple torpedoes supllanted the quads, and the depth charges
planned were redced to a mere 15.
RDF comprised of GW type 293 on the lattice foremast, AW type 291
on the pole mainmast, GR type 275 on the Mk.VI HA/LA DCT, AR type
262 on the STAAG Bofors, and where the 4" guns were fitted
in "A" and "X" positions, a barrage director
fitted with AR type 282 was carried behind the fore-funnel to
give direction in this arc of fire.
