1:600 King George V as designed. Main armament in two quadruple and one twin turret is controlled by a main director on the bridge, and there are auxiluary rangefinders on "A" and "B" turrets, and a small low angle director aft for use with the 5.25" or in an emergeny, the 14" guns. It was this small director which made Price of Wales' gunnery so erratic whilst chasing Bismarck : the main director was broken, and the lack of forward sheer made the bows plunge into the heavy seas and the resulting spray blinded the turret rangefinders, leaving only the little director. Four HA directors controlled the 5.25" guns, mounted in one on each side of each mast. The later "lozenge" arrangement as seen on Vanguard was a better design, the directors obscured each others opposite-side views. © Andrew Arthur |
1:600 King George V, as she was during the Bismarck chase, a disruptive camouflage hastily applied along the sides, RDF added ( SW type 273 on the mainmast and SR type 284 on the director ), four UP launchers added, on on "B", two on "X" and one on the quarterdeck and a single 20mm AA on "B" and "X" turret. © Andrew Arthur |
1:600 Duke of York, in 1942. Still completing when war started, additional AA armament was hastily worked in : a quad pom-pom on "B" and "X" turret, and eight single 20mm AA added quadrantly on the fore / aft superstructures. © Andrew Arthur |
1:600 Duke of York, the heaviest armed of her class, wearing "dual-ship confusion" canouflage in 1944. A quad pom-pom has been added on each side of "B" turret, on each side of the bridge, on each side of the aft funnel and sided on the quarterdeck. Forty 20mm AA crowd the superstructure, and the boats have replaced the aircraft amidships on a housing over the runway, the boat deck crowded with AA guns, two quad US Bofors on each side of their director. RDF AR type 285 has been fitted to the HA directors. © Andrew Arthur |
1:600 Howe in 1944. She was similar to Anson and Duke of York but lacked the latter's pom-poms abreast "B" turret and on the quarterdeck. © Andrew Arthur |
1:600 Anson, similar to Duke of York but without the pom-poms abreast the "B" gun. Armament was soon modified to a remarkable sixty-five 20mm AA, many in twin mounts. © Andrew Arthur |
The 5 ships of the class were built in two
groups, with the two ships of the latter group being completed
with the increased close-range armament which was fitted to two
of the first group well after their completion.
The "King George V" Class represented the capital ships
of the rearmament programme begun in 1936. They were also the
first of the "second generation" battleships built
under the restrictions of international naval treaties.
Because they were overshadowed by later and much larger ships
they have always been under-rated and criticized for their
alleged weaknesses. Yet, with the exception of the Japanese
giants, they had the thickest armour of any battleships built
during World War II and were technically equal to most of their
contemporaries. Furthermore, three of the class succeeded in
helping to destroy two German capital ships: King George V
and Prince of Wales - Bismarck; Duke of York
- Scharnhorst.
