Repeats of the "Z"
and "Ca-" classes, these ships carried the Mk.VI LA/HA.DCT
controlling remote 4.5" guns which followed it in elevation
and training. Due to the increases in topweight, 1 set of tubes
had to be removed to increase stablility, and even then they were
extremely top-heavy, due to adhering to the "S" class
hullform and incorporating more advanced, thus heavier,
technologies.
All this increased topweight meant two of the designed twin 20mm
AA guns were replaced with singles, and then to replace the
single ones abeam of the funnel with single 2pdr pom-poms.
Because of supply delays with the Mk.VI LA/HA.DCT, none of the
class were delivered before VE-day, and as such, the light AA
armament was changed in those vessels less advanced, and later in
the more advanced vessels; the pom-poms were replaced by 40mm
Bofors AA, and directing radar was fitted on the twin Bofors AA.
This class was a poor example of weight and balance, but they
offered huge advances in directed AA and anti-surface fire, which
fairly offset the topweight problems.
