1:600 Napier. The offices aft for the Flag staff meant the sweeping gear had to be removed. This is an early war view. The 4" AA gun inplace of ater tubes was a built in feature. The ridiculous feature of the "J / K" class in that the after gun could not train aft, and was blocked from training forward was sensibly reversed. © Andrew Arthur. |
Nepal in wartime camouflage. Four 20mm AA is the light AA fit, complemented by two twin 0.5" MG AA ahead of "Y" gun. Note sweeping gear on quarterdeck. © Andrew Arthur. |
Generally repeats of the
earlier "J" class, this was a simpler design to help
get as many destroyers into service by the outbreak of the
forthcoming war.
Whilst still building they were modified to carry a 4" AA
gun in place of the after tubes, and two 20mm AA cannon were
added. Two twin ( the twin was powered, the quad was not )
0.5" MG AA were added on the quarterdeck. The mast carried
AW type 286 and the HA.DCT AR type 265 radar. Destroyer sweeps
were soon removed to be replaced by two DC mortars and a 45 DC
rack.
Gurkha was renamed after being funded by soldiers from those
regiments.
Surviving ships removed the 4" gun, replaceing the tubes,
and shipped twin instead of single 20mm AA and single 20mm AA
instead of twin 0.5" AA. RDF fit was also upgraded.
