These ships had the same history as the
"Shakespeare" class, an Admirality design to combat
5" gun German destroyers, they had Army pattern 4.7" LA
guns and were considerably larger than earlier ships.
They suffered from topweight problems, and 60 tons of ballast was
carried in the bilges to kep them stable.
Montorse and Stuart, the Hawthorn Leslie ships,
had different powerplants and were more powerful than the rest.
They were re-armed pre-war like their contemporary "V &
W" and "Shakespeare" classes, all except Stuart
being Short Range escorts, Stuart being in RAN hands and
to busy to stop for a conversion.
