Bacic 1:300 arrangement of an HDML,
mounting twin 0.303" MG and a single manual 2
pounder.
A 3 pounder could be shipped in lieu. |
The ML "1000" type HDML was a standard design
produced in large numbers for every possible job conceivable;
- Local Defence
- Training
- Patrol
- Escort
- Tendering
- Search and Rescue
- Local Transport
Being just a few of the roles envisaged. It's basic wooden
Admirality design was followed from yard to yard : it was built
everywhere and anywhere, local yacht and small craft
manufacturers from the Isle of Bute to Mombasa being able to
produce them, leaving the more advanced yards to the more
complicated MGB's and MTB's. Engines varied due to local supply
conditions, and armament was two twin 0.303" MG's and a
single 2 or 3 pounder up front.
It followed MTB practice in adopting a standard 70 foot hull, but
lacked the "hard chine" design because it was not
designed for high speed, and this hullform complicated
productionm, the round bilges being simpler to build. Because it
was fairly slow, it was an extremely pleasant and easy to handle
craft, and was extremely sea-worthy.
